ZAMBI: The Zoonoses, AMR, and Bioinformatics Meeting July 6–9, 2026, Dalhousie University, Halifax, NS

The meeting brought together 153 participants from across Canada, including researchers, trainees, faculty members, and professionals from industry and non-profit organizations, to foster collaboration and knowledge exchange in One Health, antimicrobial resistance (AMR), zoonoses, and bioinformatics. The diverse attendee group reflected a strong commitment to Equity, Diversity, Inclusion, and Accessibility (EDIA), with nearly half of participants self-identifying with one or more EDIA-related characteristics.

The program featured keynote lectures, scientific presentations, poster sessions, trainee-focused workshops, networking opportunities, and an experiential visit to Dalhousie University’s Agricultural Campus in Truro. Together, these activities provided a forum for exploring emerging challenges and innovations while building new professional connections and interdisciplinary collaborations. To enhance accessibility and engagement, real-time AI translation was available throughout the event, allowing participants to follow sessions in French and several other languages.

CAN-AMR-Net provided 14 travel supports to trainees from across Canada to attend this meeting.

One Health: AMR & Emerging Zoonoses Conference

One Health 2026 Conference brought together more than 150 participants from across Canada and around the world, convening cross-disciplinary experts to address antimicrobial resistance and emerging zoonotic diseases. The conference also showcased outstanding research through oral and poster presentations.

Science Communication Workshop Series for trainees & Early Career Researchers (ECRs)

CAN-AMR-Net, in collaboration with ACER Consulting Ltd., in Jan & Feb 2026, launched a three-part virtual Science Communication Workshop Series designed to empower emerging AMR and One Health researchers.

This interactive series equipped over 30 trainees and Early Career Researchers with practical tools, real-world strategies, and hands-on experience to effectively communicate their research to diverse audiences, including policymakers, industry partners, media, and the public.

It was a pleasure working with ACER Consulting Ltd., such a dedicated and professional team! We would like to extend our sincere thanks to Drs. Claire Windeyer, Steven Roche, as well as Carlee Wright, Laura Zehr and
Daphne Van Delst for their invaluable support in making this series a success.

Antibiotic Drug Discovery: From AI-Enabled Discovery to Successful Commercialization Comprehensive Training

This comprehensive course provided an in-depth exploration of the entire antibiotic drug discovery and development pipeline—from early-stage discovery using artificial intelligence and machine learning through to regulatory approval and commercialization. It was designed for graduate students, post-doctoral fellows, researchers, and professionals in pharmaceutical sciences, microbiology, computational biology, and related fields who sought a deeper understanding of innovative approaches to addressing the global challenge of antimicrobial resistance (AMR).

The course launched successfully with 31 attendees from all across the world.  

We looked forward to offering this course again in 2027—please stay tuned for future announcements.

CAN-AMR-Net Year 2 Scholarship Recipients (January–December 2026)

We are pleased to announce the recipients of the CAN-AMR-Net scholarships for the January–December 2026 cycle. 

20 scholarships were awarded to CAN-AMR-Net trainees, including 7 Master’s students, 9 PhD students, and 4 postdoctoral fellows. Recipients were selected from a highly competitive pool of more than 100 applicants from across Canada based on demonstrated excellence, expertise, and experience in AMR and One Health research. The selection process incorporated EDIA principles to support a diverse and inclusive cohort of trainees. 

The funded trainees were recognized for their research tackling AMR from multiple perspectives, including applied and environmental sciences, public health, agriculture, and fundamental biology. Representing 12 institutions across Canada, these 20 trainees received a total of $235,000 in scholarship funding, marking a significant investment in Canada’s AMR research ecosystem and the next generation of One Health researchers. 

Operating through 5 regional hubs (Atlantic Canada, Quebec, Ontario, Prairies, and British Columbia), scholarship recipients represented 12 institutions across six provinces, including Ontario (9 trainees), Alberta (7), Quebec (4), British Columbia (2), Newfoundland and Labrador (2), and Nova Scotia (1). This national representation highlights the network’s pan-Canadian reach and its success in fostering collaborative AMR and One Health research across diverse regions and disciplines.

AMR: A One Health Approach Virtual Seminar Series

The AMR: A One Health Approach Seminar Series brought together a diverse global audience, with over 450 registrants and more than 30 instructors and speakers. Across the series, participants engaged in a wide range of discussions spanning human, animal, and environmental health. The event created a truly interdisciplinary space for sharing insights and practical strategies to tackle antimicrobial resistance from every angle.

The 2025 AMR Symposium, powered by bioMérieux, wrapped up in Toronto with strong participation from across the AMR and One Health communities. Over two days, attendees engaged in insightful keynote talks, interactive sessions, and dynamic discussions focused on advancing solutions to antimicrobial resistance.

CAN-AMR-Net was proud to contribute to this year’s program, including:

  • A well-attended trainee and member luncheon, which brought together researchers from across Canada

  • A Policy Workshop highlighting national priorities and collaborative approaches to AMR action

  • Scientific presentations by several CAN-AMR-Net members, showcasing impactful research and innovation

The symposium fostered meaningful exchanges, new collaborations, and strong engagement across sectors.

✨ What an inspiring week in Montréal! ✨

From 25–29 August 2025, we had the immense pleasure of hosting the Canopy & CAN-AMR-Net joint trainee workshop-symposium at the Université de Montréal.

This multidisciplinary event brought together trainees from both the Canadian One Health Training Program on Emerging Zoonoses – Canopy- and the Canadian Antimicrobial Resistance Network – CAN-AMR-Net- for a week of engaging sessions, panels, and networking.

It was a beautiful week full of learning, collaboration, and exchange. The energy and curiosity of the trainees from both groups were truly inspiring.

A special thank you to all of the instructors, panelists, leaders and organizers who generously shared their time, expertise, and insights. Your contributions made the experience especially rich and impactful.

We are grateful for the collaborative spirit that carried through the entire week and look forward to seeing how this momentum translates into action for One Health.

CAN-AMR-Net Town Halls, May 12 & 30, 2025 On May 12 and May 30, CAN-AMR-Net hosted two virtual Town Hall sessions to engage network members

On May 12 and May 30, CAN-AMR-Net hosted two virtual Town Hall sessions to engage network members in shaping the strategic direction of Canada’s coordinated response to antimicrobial resistance (AMR) through a One Health lens.

These sessions brought together professionals and leaders from diverse sectors—including public health, veterinary and human medicine, environmental science, and policy—to explore priorities across three foundational pillars: mentorship, partnership, and training development. The discussions underscored the network’s commitment to fostering interdisciplinary collaboration and building national capacity in AMR.

Key takeaways from the breakout sessions included:

  • Mentorship: Participants highlighted the value of formalizing mentorship pathways within the network, particularly by connecting early-career researchers and professionals with experienced mentors across sectors. Suggestions included long-term mentoring structures, mentor directories, and support for peer-based mentorship frameworks.

  • Partnership: There was strong consensus on the need to build and strengthen intersectoral partnerships. Participants emphasized leveraging existing collaborations formed during the COVID-19 pandemic, promoting open data sharing, and aligning CAN-AMR-Net activities with ongoing provincial and national initiatives.

  • Training Development: Discussions focused on the design of inclusive, hands-on training opportunities that reflect the complexity of AMR challenges. Ideas included interdisciplinary case studies, real-world policy simulations, and trainee engagement in cross-sector projects. Ensuring equity and accessibility in training delivery was also identified as a top priority.

These collaborative discussions have laid the groundwork for action plans that will guide the network’s next phase of development.

We thank all participants for their time, insight, and continued commitment to building a coordinated and impactful AMR response in Canada.
